OSU’s Top-Notch College of Dentistry
Many of the best family dental practitioners in Cincinnati are homegrown. Located in nearby Columbus, The Ohio State University College of Dentistry is the state’s only publicly supported dental school. It was also the academic home of the Beckham Square Family Dental dentists. As an institution committed to quality education, rigorous research, and extensive community outreach, OSU’s College of Dentistry trains professionals to embrace the highest dental standards and commit to patient-centered care.
Facts About The Ohio State University College of Dentistry
The College of Dentistry at OSU is the fourth-largest public dental school in the country. It’s home to nine academic divisions representing all major specialties in the field. The College is consistently recognized among the top schools in the country, occupying the #12 spot on the Scimago Institutions Rankings list.
In addition to Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degrees, the school confers a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene, various Master of Science degrees, a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in oral biology, and several advanced training program certificates. Dr. Schmerler and Dr. Hynes graduated from the four-year D.D.S. program, which admits only about 10% of applicants yearly.
OSU’s College of Dentistry students get far more than just rigorous classroom training. The following are also what gives this institution’s stellar reputation:
Hands-On Clinical Training
In addition to quality classroom instruction, students fulfill a pre-determined number of laboratory hours to gain practical experience. They also participate in clinical rotations to apply their knowledge in real-world settings.
Cutting-Edge Research
Typically, the best places of higher learning are also top research institutions, and OSU is no exception. The College of Dentistry has been awarded a T32 training grant to increase diversity in the dental workforce and improve dental healthcare. Also called “Multidisciplinary Research Training in Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Sciences,” this grant will better equip the College to train the next generation of clinical scientists, academics, and top hometown practitioners in dentistry.
Student Dental Clinics
To cut costs, people living in the Columbus, OH, area can go to the College’s Student Dental Clinics to access essential services at lower costs. These clinics allow students to expand their training and gain more experience.
Community Outreach and Education
To complete the triad of teaching, research, and service, the College of Dentistry participates in many community outreach programs to increase awareness of the importance of oral health. Outreach also enables the school to improve dental care and education access among underserved populations.
One of the most popular programs is the Dental HOME (Health Outreach Mobile Experience) Coach. This mobile unit brings dental students under faculty supervision to children who need primary dental care. The HOME Coach reaches about 2,900 children in the Columbus area each year.
Another successful initiative is the Oral Health Improvement through Outreach (OHIO) Project. This program allows supervised fourth-year dental students to spend at least 43 days providing their services in dental clinics throughout Ohio. The program benefits the students, giving them exposure to private practice and the inner workings of a dental clinic.
