Dentures are a semi-permanent method to replace missing teeth, and are designed to be taken out and put back in. While they are intended to do the work of natural teeth, dentures will not feel like natural teeth. However, the dentures made today are more natural-looking and more comfortable than they used to be. Cosmetic dentistry has come a long way in a short time, and today’s options for dentures can give you a beautiful and functional smile people won’t even know is removable.
Some dentures are partial, and some are full. Other dentures are hybrid dental bridges, or implant-supported dentures. If you are in need of dentures, give us a call. After a dental cleaning, exam and x-ray, our dentists will recommend the best option for you, depending on how many teeth need replaced and what your jaw health looks like.
How are Dentures Made?
Full dentures are made of a flesh-colored acrylic base that sets on the gums. The lower denture is made in the shape of a horseshoe, so that it does not interfere with your tongue. The upper denture covers the roof of the mouth, making adherence easier. Our family dentists will make an impression of your mouth, and then send that impression to a dental laboratory, where they will manufacture the dentures. There are several different options for dentures that, depending on your budget, needs and current oral health, range from immediate but temporary to semi-permanent and completely customized to your mouth.
The Four Types of Dentures
There are a few different options for dentures, which means virtually any patient can replace their teeth, even if their health isn’t too good or their budget doesn’t allow for implant crowns. Do remember, though, that traditional dentures will need to be replaced every few years; your jaw bone will continue to change over time since there are no teeth in the sockets.
Full Denture
Full dentures are most common and are created after all teeth have been extracted and the gums have healed. It can take several months for the gums to heal, during which time the patient is without teeth. This is a primary issue for the patient to consider when opting for full dentures.
Immediate Full Denture
Another type of denture, the immediate full denture, can be ready for insertion immediately after the dentist has extracted the teeth. The dentist prepares these by making measurements and models of the jaw during an earlier visit, prior to the extraction surgery.
The benefit of immediate dentures is never being without teeth, but the drawback is that they must be realigned after a matter of months. This is necessary because the jawbone will reshape during the healing process and thus the dentures will become loose and uncomfortable.
Partial Denture / Bridge
The partial denture, or dental bridge, uses a metal framework that attaches to the patient’s natural teeth. The framework may need to anchor to a crown if the natural teeth do not provide a suitable support. Some partial dentures can be removed, while others cannot.
Implant-Supported Denture
Implant-supported dentures utilize just a few dental implants to anchor a full set of teeth in place. This essentially makes the dentures a permanent installation. You get improved biting power, a natural appearance, and the implant anchors preserve the health of your jaw.
There are also implant-supported dental bridges if you’re missing several teeth but want to keep the ones you have. Implant-supported dentures and bridges don’t need to be removed to be cleaned; you can care for them just the same way as you would your natural teeth.
Advantages of Choosing Dentures to Replace Missing Teeth
It might seem like dentures are the least-attractive option when it comes to replacing missing teeth, but with the natural-looking, high-functioning dentures we offer our patients, that’s just not the case anymore. In fact, there are some advantages to choosing dentures over other kinds of tooth replacement:
- Non-invasive: People with health conditions or advanced age, who need to be careful about surgical procedures for implant crowns or metal allergies for dental bridges, can avoid risking health complications with dentures.
- Short timeline: Custom dentures can be made, delivered and fitted more quickly than implants and bridges.
- Cost-Efficient: Implants and crowns are prohibitively expensive for some people, especially if you need several missing teeth replaced. Dentures are a much more affordable option for restoring your smile.
