Fear a Root Canal? Don’t — They’re Actually Quite Painless!

Your dentist tells you that you need a root canal, and you panic: What did I ever do to deserve this cruel and tragic fate?

Relax. Root canals are really not that big of a deal. They have a bad reputation — most people think they are painful and scary. But thanks to recent advancements in dental pain management, modern root canals are really a piece of cake. In fact, root canals can be fairly painless. Honestly, your mouth will be too drugged up to feel much.

In fact, the scariest part of a root canal is the cost. They can be expensive, but the costs are usually covered at least partly by your insurance plan. Your dentist can give you an estimate of what it will cost — and may be able to set you up a payment plan to help manage it.

Root Canals Aren’t Really That Painful

The idea that root canals are painful is really an outdated myth. Once upon a time they were something to cry about, but modern anesthetics make root canals painless. Other than that initial pinch as we apply the numbing agent, you really shouldn’t feel a thing. If you do experience any discomfort, tell us. We can give you an increased dose of numbing agent. Don’t be shy.

A Root Canal Will Save Your Tooth

If you have a tooth that is severely decayed or in extreme pain, a root canal is your best option to save it and avoid a tooth extraction. A root canal will remove the root pulp and save the tooth. You may need to get a tooth crown to protect the tooth and this can be expensive, but it’s a bargain compared to getting a dental implant.

A Root Canal Will Take a While

You’ll spend less time in the chair than your grandparents did for their root canals, but it will still take a while to complete — perhaps 2 to 3 hours. Bring some music or a podcast. Get comfortable. (Thanks to the numbing agent, we’ll make sure you are.) You’ll be in that chair a while.

Root Canals Keep You Healthy

You usually have to get a root canal because you have an infection. If you don’t get a root canal, this infection can spread to other areas of your mouth and body eventually. The infection can enter your bloodstream and make your blood septic. This can lead to extreme illness and even death.
