X-Rays, Dental Care & Pregnancy: Is It Safe for the Baby?

tooth xray

As a family dental practice in Sharonville and Cincinnati, we’re often asked by expectant mothers if X-rays are safe during pregnancy. The short answer is yes. Both the ADA and ACOG consider X-rays to be safe during pregnancy with appropriate shielding.

Routine X-rays can usually be postponed until after birth to be safe. Yet some X-`rays are necessary for certain dental procedures, especially emergencies.

What Dental Work Should Be Done and When

Dental cleanings are recommended during pregnancy because the hormonal increase during pregnancy can cause the gums to swell, bleed, and trap food, which can be hard on your gums. Dental work can also limit infection and gum disease, which has been linked to preterm birth.

Cavity fillings and crowns should also be treated to reduce the chance of infection.

Any elective procedures such as teeth whitening or other cosmetic dentistry should be postponed until after the birth.

Best Time of Pregnancy for Dental Work

Some women choose to avoid any dental work during the first trimester. The second trimester is ideal for most dental work. The third trimester is generally avoided because of the discomfort of spending too much time on your back as well as the risk of going into labor.

Talk to Your Family Dentist

Tell your dentist if you are pregnant or even think you might be pregnant. He or she can recommend the safest procedures and limit any medications that might affect the baby.

You’ll want to limit any anesthesia to as little as possible but still be comfortable.
