Why Brushing/Flossing May Be Good Your Heart

You know regular brushing and flossing is critical for dental health. Your family dentist recommends that you brush twice a day for at least two minutes each session. We also recommend that you floss at least once, either in the morning or at night. But did you know that regular flossing and brushing is important for heart health too? Scientists don’t yet know why the oral hygiene and overall health are intricately linked, but they do know that taking care of your teeth can actually limit your risk of cardiovascular disease, limit your risk for stroke, and help you live longer.

Theories behind the Potential Connection

Doctors and dentists don’t know for sure, but there are a number of theories. Some dentists suspect that the bacteria that causes gum disease and cavities can also travel through the bloodstream and cause inflammation and damage to the heart. Scientists have found remnants of oral bacteria within atherosclerotic blood vessels far from the mouth. Yet heart disease does not seem to be reduced through antibiotics.

Other doctors and dentists suspect natural inflammation caused by the immune system as a result to oral bacteria could be hard on the heart.

Other doctors suspect the link is so strong because smoking can cause both dental problems and heart problems.

The Importance of Flossing & Brushing

Though a direct link is inconclusive, oral health is certainly an essential element of overall health. And the best way to avoid cavities, plaque buildup, gum disease and tooth loss is to brush and floss regularly and see your dentist often. It’s good for your teeth and may be great for your heart too.

Use a Brushing/Flossing App

If you keep track of how much you brush or floss, or more importantly how often you skip, you’ll likely be surprised by how much you miss. Download an app to help you keep track. While many brushing apps are designed for kids, they can help adults as well. These apps can not only time your brushing so you brush the entire recommended 2 minutes, but will also record how often you brush and floss. The more of a record you make, the more likely you’ll follow through on your dental care plans.
