Want Healthy Gums? 7 Secrets to Amazing Dental Health
Most people don’t think about their gums when it comes to their oral health. They instead focus on their teeth. But as your family dentist, we want you to understand that gums are literally the foundation to a healthy mouth. They are so important not only to a beautiful set of teeth, but also a healthy smile as well as your overall health. In fact, great oral health begins with the gums. Here are 7 secrets to maintaining a healthy set of gums and amazing dental care.
Be Consistent on Your Dental Care
For teeth as well as healthy gums, consistency in routine dental care is crucial. Like cavities, gum disease is a result of plaque buildup. It takes roughly 12 to 24 hours for dental plaque to become dental tartar that can literally eat your tooth. That’s why we recommend brushing at least twice a day for two minutes — when you start your day and just before you go to bed. It’s so important to prevent tartar buildup not only for your teeth but the health of your gums as well.
Always Floss
There are hard to reach places your toothbrush can’t reach — mainly your gums. Flossing once a day removes plaque and food buildup in hard to reach areas. It’s important to floss correctly.
Go Electric
Trust us — go all the way and treat yourself to that fancy electric toothbrush. Research has found electric toothbrushes to be substantially better at removing plaque than the traditional approach.
Don’t Forget to Scrub Your Tongue
Your tongue contains bacteria that not only causes bad breath, but can increase your chances of cavities and gum disease. Give your tongue a gentle scrubbing after brushing your teeth and gums. This improves your overall health and leads to healthier gums as well.
Replace Your Toothbrush Often
You should replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months. When the bristles start to bend, they become much less effective at removing plaque and the bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease. It’s a good idea to buy the multi-pack of toothbrushes so you always have a backup when you notice your current one wearing out. If you use an electric toothbrush (and you really should) buy multiple heads for it and keep them well stocked.
Rinse Your Mouth with Mouthwash Regularly
Swishing can remove food debris from teeth and gums in places that toothbrushes and even flossing can’t always reach. Choose a mouthwash with fluoride to protect your teeth longer from plaque and tartar. This will help prevent cavities as well as gum disease.
Have Check Ups Regularly
Dental checkups are so important to not only your teeth but your gums as well. We can help spot signs of gum disease early and work to manage or prevent it. Always see us at least every six months. This is a routine procedure that is often fully covered by your dental insurance.
