Mental Wellness Exercises to Reduce Stress and Prevent Teeth Grinding

wisdom tooth pain sensitivity

Do you catch yourself grinding your teeth fairly often? If you do it too much, you can wear down your teeth. It can also cause gum recession, loose teeth, headaches, and even damage to the jawline.

Most people who grind their teeth do so at night unconsciously, but some also do it during the day time. While scientists don’t fully understand what causes people to grind their teeth, stress is known to be a key contributing factor. If you are grinding your teeth a lot and experiencing stress, there are several mindful exercises you could try for relief. Here are some techniques to improve well-being and minimize stress.

Meditation

Don’t let meditation intimidate you. It’s not about maintaining a perfectly clear mind while balancing on one foot. It’s really just about relaxing and feeling comfortable in your own skin. Recognize your thoughts as they come and allow them to evaporate.

Find a place you feel comfortable where you won’t be disturbed. Put on some relaxing music if needed. Light candles. Run a bath. Escape into nature. Breathe in and out and learn to be with yourself, nothing more.

Nature’s Therapy

Being in the great outdoors naturally distresses us. In fact, a recent study out of Stanford found that short walks in nature significantly reduced depression and boosted well-being. City walks were found not to be as effective. So take a walk in the woods, even if it’s just for 20 minutes every day. It will improve your outlook, reduce stress, and magnify your happiness.

Limit Social Media

Before bed, avoid TV, looking at Facebook, and digital devices in general. A study by the American Psychological Association found that people who check into their devices often reported significantly higher stress than others not hooked to gadgets. Put on some relaxing music instead, curl into a good book, take a relaxing bath.

Consider a Mouth Guard at Night

If all else fails, consider wearing a mouth guard at night. This will prevent grinding, even if it doesn’t address the stress root of the problem. Your family dentist can suggest some brands
