5 Ways to Make Brushing Fun for Kids
Want to make your kids groan and roll their eyes? Tell them to brush their teeth. To most children, brushing can feel like any household chore. However, instilling consistency in brushing will set your kids up for good oral health later in life. It’ll also help them reduce their likelihood of needing more costly and drastic procedures like root canals or teeth pulling from their local dentist.
But there’s no reason you can’t make brushing fun. Here are 5 ideas to incorporate a little more enjoyment into the daily brushing routine.
1. Get them a fun toothbrush.
One of the easiest ways to make brushing fun is to let your kid pick their own fun toothbrush. It can feature their favorite cartoon character, color, or cute animal. Since the American Dental Association recommends getting a new brush every 3 to 4 months, your kids can look forward to a new little indulgence every so often.
2. Go messy with the toothpaste.
Kids love to make messes, and being in the bathroom will make clean-up a little easier. Find a kid’s toothpaste that foams and bubbles. Make a game out of it, and don’t be afraid to get a little silly—as long as thorough brushing takes place.
3. Brush with them.
A family that brushes together prevents tooth decay together. It takes just two minutes in the morning and again before bed. Brushing with your kid models positive health behaviors and gives you and your little one more bonding time.
4. Have fun with apps.
Download a fun app that encourages proper brushing. Our staff at Beckham Square Family Dental recommends Brush DJ, which plays music for the full two minutes of brushing. Dance it out with your kid as you both brush. Also, check out TVOKids Tooth Time. This site has links to several other fun apps such as Tooth Time, which features a character your child can brush with.
5. Make a reward chart.
Create a reward system for teeth brushing. Encourage your child to set a goal for them to brush their teeth twice a day for a specified period. If they achieve this goal, you can give them a prize, such as a trip to the park, extra time to watch their favorite show, or a special toy.
