5 Tricks to Relax and Find Your Inner Zen at the Dentist
Is your fear of the dentist so overwhelming that it interferes with your oral health? We could tell you to just relax, but that’s easier said than done, right? However, you can learn some tricks to help you kick back at your next dental appointment, even if it’s for a root canal or cracked filling.
Remember, you’ve got this. Try out these 5 tricks for finding your inner Zen in the dental chair.
1. Zone Out to Music.
Bring your favorite music on your smartphone or other device with headphones. Music that relaxes you is a great way to ease into the dental chair. You might also try books on tape or your favorite podcasts. If the dentist or hygienist needs to communicate, you can work out hand signals with them in advance or insert only one earbud so that you can hear their instructions.
2. Wear Some Cool Shades.
Dental lights can be blindingly intense and stressful for some patients. Bring your favorite sunglasses to reduce the glare and help you relax. You might even become so tranquil you’re tempted to sleep!
3. Take a Break.
If you’ve got a long procedure, don’t be shy about asking your dentist for a break. There are plenty of dental professionals in Cincinnati who are happy to accommodate. Even when they’re busy, your dentist can spend your break time with other patients. Plus, you’ll feel better and more relaxed when you resume the procedure.
4. Don’t Be Shy About Pain.
Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, and you deserve to be comfortable and free from any pain. If something still hurts after anesthesia, don’t be afraid to ask your dentist to numb you more. Even if you don’t like getting pricked again with the needle, it’s a small price to pay for enduring comfort. You shouldn’t have to endure any pain.
5. Don’t Arrive Too Early.
It’s always a good idea to be on time for dental appointments, but don’t arrive too early. Sitting in the waiting area and then the exam room can cause your anxiety to build. If you get there before your appointment time, park the car and take a walk. The nature and the exercise will help you relax.
