4 Reasons Your Gums May Bleed When You Brush

Does brushing your teeth make your gums hurt? Does your mouth bleed after you brush? It’s a sign of a potentially serious problem with your oral health and something you should discuss with your dentist. In the meantime, here are a few options to consider.

Are You Brushing Correctly?

Bleeding gums could be simply a sign of improper brushing. You may be brushing too vigorously or using a toothbrush with hard bristles. This may be what’s making your gums sore.

Yes, your dentist wants you to brush — at least twice per day, for two minutes each time. It lowers your risk for tooth decay and gum disease. This means fewer emergency dental appointments, fewer root canals, and a more beautiful smile.

But the truth is you don’t need to brush hard. Gentle brushing is actually better for your gums. Brushing your teeth is not like scrubbing a dirty dish. It’s more like washing hair — it should be smooth and gentle. Go easy on those teeth. Reach all the surfaces with smooth, even motions. And always use a soft bristle toothbrush. It should say “Soft” on the package.

You May Have Gum Disease

Nearly half of all Americans suffer from some sort of gum disease. The good news is gum disease is preventable and treatable. Gingivitis, mild gum disease, and periodontitis, a severe gum disease, can cause your gums to swell, feel tender and turn red. This can make your gums extra sensitive. They’ll feel more pain and tend to bleed when you brush.

Think you might have gum disease? See a dentist. We can diagnose you and suggest ways to treat it so you have healthier gums.

Do You Have Canker Sores?

Canker sores can be irritating and make it painful to brush. Canker sores have a white center and are red on the edges. If your gums have canker sores, they will be sore and tender to touch.

Canker sores are usually caused by infection. People with autoimmune diseases are more likely to develop canker sores. Most will disappear within 14 days. If they last more than 3 weeks, see a dentist.

If you think you might have canker sores, try gargling with salt water for a couple of minutes. This will help alleviate the soreness and lower the infection.

Do You Smoke?

If you use tobacco, this may cause your gums to hurt and bleed. Smoking cigarettes and cigars can damage your gums and lead to gum disease. Smokeless tobacco is even harder on gums. To improve your health, consider quitting. You’ll lower your risk for gum disease, oral cancer and other cancers.
